Dawson City

Here it is... Dawson City... dirt roads that they water to keep down the dust... boardwalks so you keep your feet clean. Our day of rest almost over. Tomorrow it is the first of eight successive days on the Dempster Highway, average just over 100 km per day, probably okay when dry, but it won't be all the way and we hear that it can be tough going if it's wet.... and no electricity or internet until Inuvik on August 9th

to Dawson City - part 2

day 4 - foggy start

trying to move the Yukon... either that or a bit of stretching in the middle
of a long day into a strong headwind

The mountains will be where we are at the end of the first day on the Dempster

Four days riding to Dawson City - part 1

..back on the road for 140 km out of Whitehorse

...haven't seen any real moose yet, but this was grazing on the lawn of a
bakery where we had a nice coffee and cinnamon bun stop
Weather is cool, sun is nice, and we managed to stay clear of the black cloud behind us.

Birthday on the roadion

Red squirrel trying out the bicycle in camp

Arctic ground squirrel keeping an eye on us

yes... we're still alive and well

remains of one of the Klondike era road houses

calm today, but not every day

...and we keep pedaling, average over 140 km per day to Dawson City

Skagway to Whitehorse

Skagway

Climbing the White Pass

...3300-foot climb in 26 km... it took a while.
...then briefly back into BC before crossing 60 into the Yukon...

...and clearer skies...

...and gorgeous views to Carcross where we camped for the night...

...across the road from a lake where this sandpiper was happy enough to be photographed
Underway again the next day...

...mother loon and youngster in lake en route...

...and into Whitehorse for a day of rest, and laundry etc.

A visitor on our breakfast table

and this is how they got around a little over a hundred years ago when the gold rush was on...
...and stern-wheeler like the "Klondike" which is preserved in Whitehorse

Many of these boats didn't make it through this canyon before
the water levels were raised when a hydro dam was put in

It's a late arrival in Prince Rupert for an overnight before taking an Alaskan Ferry to Skagway.
